Jumper’s knee

Does it hurt when you climb stairs, jump or run? If so, you may have jumper’s knee.
Jumper’s knee is characterized by overexertion of the patellar tendon that causes discomfort around the tendon’s attachment to the lower leg and/or around the lower edge of the patella. Patellar tendonitis is the medical term. When jumping and running, the stretching mechanism in the knee joint and on the patellar tendon is heavily stressed. As a result, the tendon may sustain injury in the form of partial ruptures or chronic overexertion, which is known as tendinopathy. The pain can be intense and is usually felt in the lower part of the kneecap or around the tendon attachment to the lower leg. The pain is most pronounced when the knee is extended. Morning stiffness may also occur. In the early stages, the pain is mostly felt after vigorous movement, but the condition can worsen and cause pain during movement and sometimes even at rest.
