Hallux rigidus

Osteoarthritis or wear in the base of the big toe is called Hallux rigidus, as it causes movement restriction due to heavy deposits around the edges of the joint surface. Oftentimes, the cause is repeated small damage to the cartilage in the base of the big toe. This leads to early wear and tear that unfortunately can cause chronic pain. The mobility of the big toe joint, especially during upward bends, is reduced.
Symptoms: Stiffness and pain in the base of the big toe. Most noticeable at the end of the step. Sometimes pain after exertion. Often the result of some kind of repeated trauma. Sufferers generally find it difficult to walk normally and to run.

Ortolab insoles:

The dynamic pad in the forefoot can help. For our custom insoles Ortolab HGP Individ, we can also include a carbon fiber plate under the forefoot that supports the big toe in order to stabilize and reduce the movement in the big toe and its joint.
It is very important to choose the right footwear. The shoes must have a good “roll” to them in the midsole, which supports the unfolding of the step and allows the wearer to walk and run as normally as possible.
